Monrovia: Liberia has captured international attention after announcing that it will temporarily host Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia on humanitarian grounds. The decision follows a formal request from the government of the United States and comes after several days of consultations with both local and international partners.
Officials described the move as a demonstration of Liberia’s commitment to human dignity, international cooperation, and principled humanitarian action at a time of growing global uncertainty.
A Legacy of Humanitarian Leadership
Liberia, one of Africa’s oldest republics, has a long history of welcoming people fleeing persecution. From freedom fighters to political refugees, the country has consistently positioned itself as a place of refuge built on values of justice and liberty.
By accepting Abrego Garcia, the government reaffirmed this tradition while making it clear that the arrangement is temporary, lawful, and transparent.

Ensuring Law, Security, and Accountability
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the process is being closely coordinated with the U.S. Department of State and international partners to ensure legal and security requirements are met.
Officials outlined several safeguards. These include thorough security screening before and after arrival, respect for due process and human rights, guarantees against returning the individual to any country where he could face persecution, and collaboration with the United Nations and other agencies to explore durable resettlement options.
The government emphasized that national security and sovereignty remain fully protected throughout the process.
Not a Political Compromise
Authorities stressed that Liberia’s decision was made voluntarily and in good faith. A senior government official noted that the agreement was not the result of external pressure but a humanitarian gesture aligned with the country’s values and international obligations.
“This is a humanitarian decision, not a political negotiation,” the official said.
Strengthening Historic U.S.–Liberia Relations
The government also highlighted that the decision reflects the deep and historic bond between Liberia and the United States, a relationship grounded in shared values and longstanding cooperation.
This development positions Liberia as a responsible player in global humanitarian diplomacy and underscores its relevance on the international stage.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country remains committed to lawful and humane approaches in responding to global humanitarian needs.
