Dr. Rasha Kelej, Chief Executive Officer of the Merck Foundation, has been named among the 100 Most Influential Africans by the UK-based New African Magazine.
According to a statement released through the Merck Foundation’s media channels, Dr. Kelej shares the 2025 honor with prominent African leaders, including João Lourenço, Cyril Ramaphosa, and John Mahama.
This recognition marks the seventh consecutive year Dr. Kelej has appeared on the influential list, which celebrates leaders, innovators, and change-makers across public service, business, the creative industries, and social impact.
Under her leadership, the Merck Foundation has rolled out far-reaching initiatives aimed at transforming healthcare systems and empowering women and girls across Africa. Key programs include “More Than a Mother,” which promotes reproductive health awareness, challenges infertility stigma, and supports women’s empowerment; and extensive scholarship programs that have trained healthcare professionals in 44 critical medical specialties across 52 countries.

The Foundation has also prioritized girls’ education, awarding scholarships to more than 1,200 underprivileged students in 19 African countries, and launched “Empowering Berna,” an initiative that supports childless women to establish small businesses and achieve financial independence.
Dr. Kelej has worked closely with over 33 African and Asian First Ladies, alongside governments and civil society partners, to advance healthcare access, education, and women’s rights. Her approach uniquely integrates the media, fashion, and arts communities to drive public awareness and foster lasting cultural change.
Reacting to the recognition, Dr. Kelej said:
“I am deeply honored to be recognized among Africa’s most influential leaders. This motivates me and my team to continue transforming healthcare and empowering women and girls across the continent.” The annual 100 Most Influential Africans list is regarded as one of the continent’s most prestigious acknowledgments of leadership and impact.
